Sand Sculpture Masterpieces

You’ve made sand castles, but chances are your projects didn’t look anything like this! The works at the US Sand Sculpting Challenge are true artistic masterpieces. Check out the event and get inspired; it’s Labor Day weekend but there are still warm days left to head to the beach and explore your talent.

International Competition

Teams come from all over the world to demonstrate their abilities to craft sand into meaningful monuments that inspire emotional reactions. You never know what inspiration their creative minds will work with. Past sculptures have included a Lobster Monster, an Embrace, and Shoo b doo b doo!

Join in the Fun

The action on the piers isn’t only for professional artists. Kids can play in the sandbox, with pros helping them craft amazing sandcastles. There’ll be bands, singers, and dancers providing entertainment. Beach food often runs to hotdogs, but at this beach event there’ll be gourmet food trucks, wine, and beer.

Love the art you see? You can’t take home a sand sculpture, but you can take home the work of artists and craftsmen in other media, including glass, wood, and ceramics.

Plenty of Time to Enjoy

The event runs all weekend long, with award ceremonies on Saturday and Sunday. The action continues past twilight. What a wonderful, unusual, romantic setting for a moonlight stroll!

The event takes place on the B street cruise ship pier downtown, and you can easily explore some of San Diego’s other attractions after checking out the sculptures: the Maritime Museum, USS Midway, Little Italy, and Gaslamp Quarter are all short walks away.

The Best Western Plus Island Palms is only minutes away from that event and all the wonderful attractions of San Diego. You can linger under the stars at the sand sculpting competition, or head back to our property to keep the romance going as you stroll along our bayside paths.
