San Diego’s Best Waterfront Restaurants

By Best Western Island Palms Hotel

Blue Wave Bar & Grill (just steps away)

At the risk of singing our own praises, we’re quite partial to our own Blue Wave Bar & Grill, located right here at Best Western Plus Island Palms. As a classic California café, Blue Wave offers fine dining in a casual atmosphere — right in front of Shelter Island’s marina and alongside our stunning outdoor pool. Planning to stop by for this month’s Big Game, or on Valentine’s Day? We’ve got you covered with signature specials and special events. Don’t forget to grab a refreshing cocktail from our full-service bar so you can sip and savor while you look out over our gorgeous marina view.

2051 Shelter Island Dr, San Diego, CA 92106

Humphreys SoCal Dining and Music (0.3 miles)

This exceptional eatery — just a short stroll up Shelter Island at our sister hotel Humphreys Half Moon Inn — is a great option for a delicious waterfront dining experience. Enjoy locally sourced seafood, steaks, and other fresh twists on creative cuisine. Not only will you be treated to the perfect plates, but the views of the marina are unbeatable! Whether you’re grabbing a bite before attending one of Humphreys Concerts, or simply want to take in the views, you’re sure to have a beautiful time when you stop by to check it out.

2241 Shelter Island Dr, San Diego, CA 92106

Bali Hai (0.6 miles)

Our Shelter Island neighbors at Bali Hai offer a grand Polynesian dining experience wrapped in a delightfully kitschy, tropically Googie exterior. The potent fruity beverages (a.k.a. their dangerously potent Bali Hai Mai Tai) and sweeping San Diego Bay views may be some of their biggest draws, but the crazy-fresh poké bowl is what you’re really here for. Bali Hai’s version not only features the bright, citrusy tuna you’d expect, but also generous and authentic sides like sticky rice and creamy mac salad. To get there, just enjoy a quick stroll across the island from our hotel for a truly romantic dinner date!

2230 Shelter Island Dr, San Diego, CA 92106

Ketch Grill and Taps (0.8 miles)

Just a 10-minute walk from our front door, Ketch Grill and Taps offers fresh seafood in a modern setting. Craft beer, an extensive wine list, and a spectacular harborside view are all on the menu here. You’ll also discover a full range of breakfast, lunch and dinner choices like New England-style chowder, a delicious short-rib melt sandwich, macadamia-crusted mahi mahi, and sweet chile-glazed salmon. Be sure to ask your server about the “Ketch of the Day,” too.

2614 Shelter Island Dr, San Diego, CA 92106

Mitch’s Seafood (1.2 miles)

Don’t let the casual atmosphere at Mitch’s suggest that they don’t take their food very seriously. They do — and so do we San Diegans. Despite embodying the laid-back SoCal vibe, their pier-to-plate menu features fiercely fresh, locally sourced seafood, all caught sustainably and prepared deliciously. You’ll also find Dungeness crab, calamari, battered cod, and beer served just this side of freezing. Insider tip: don’t pass up the delicious fish tacos. We never do.

1403 Scott St, San Diego, CA 92106

The Holding Company (3.8 miles)

This inviting three-story hangout in Ocean Beach is located just half a block from the water. The always-hopping space features live music, Asian-inspired cuisine, and lively happy hours. When you arrive, head up to the rooftop for a uniquely Pacific perspective. We recommend trying the Phở Dip — a sandwich inspired by the legendarily delicious Vietnamese soup. It’s a scrumptious specialty you simply can’t get anywhere else. Insider Tip: we recommend ordering their famous Skrewball Peanut Butter whiskey shot. Originating at their original location, this spirit has become popular nationwide. It’s worth checking off your San Diego foodie bucket-list.

5046 Newport Ave, San Diego, CA 92107

Island Prime/C-Level (4 miles)

Island Prime (and its on-site C-Level Lounge) takes oceanfront dining to an entirely new level. Set on piles directly over the water, this eatery lets you go beyond the beach — offering exceptional views of the San Diego Bay and downtown skyline. The menu also offers an elevated experience, specializing in steaks and seafood. Start with the splendid Kumiai oysters or crab cakes before diving into grilled swordfish, prime ribeye, or the best rack of lamb in town. This is a fantastic choice for a romantic evening or first date; one that’s sure to impress.

880 Harbor Island Dr, San Diego, CA 92101

Portside Pier (5 miles)

Portside Pier is a recently built dining destination in the Embarcadero area. You’ll be spoiled for choice here thanks to a collection of restaurants, elevated viewing decks, and 360-degree panoramic waterfront views. Whether you’re enjoying traditional Mexican at Miguel’s Cocina, handcrafted cocktails at Topsail, or a little after-dinner sweetness at Portside Coffee & Gelato, you can feast your eyes on awe-inspiring views of the Embarcadero right outside the window.

1360 N Harbor Dr, San Diego, CA 92101

Cannonball (7.2 miles)

Cannonball is a favorite spot among locals. Once you check it out, you won’t be surprised as to why that might be. Directly overlooking the Mission Beach Boardwalk, Cannonball can lay claim to having the largest beachfront rooftop in the city, with panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean. They also serve always-fresh sushi, seafood, and fresh California cuisine. You’ll find a delightful drinks menu of beachy cocktails here, too. So order up, kick back, and enjoy the stunning view.

3105 Ocean Front Walk, San Diego, CA 92109

World Famous (7.5 miles)

World Famous is an aptly named beachfront dining destination, given its popularity. The vibe is casual, even though the food is decidedly a cut above. The outdoor patio is adjacent to the Pacific Beach boardwalk, affording a spectacular view, as well as world-class people-watching. The breakfasts are particularly good here, but it’s impossible to go wrong any time of day. Seafood and salads are also great choices at World Famous.

711 Pacific Beach Dr, San Diego, CA 92109

George’s at the Cove (12.9 miles)

There is perhaps no more upbeat place to enjoy San Diego’s famously mild weather than at this local institution. Long treasured as a jewel of the city dining scene, George’s has offered rooftop seating since before rooftop seating was cool. Whether you opt for a table overlooking the ocean, or belly up to the stocked-to-the-gills full-service bar, you’ll enjoy stellar views with your booze and chews.

San Diego’s Favorite Fresh Seafood Spots

By Best Western Island Palms Hotel

Point Loma Seafoods (1.2 miles)

(Photo: @pointlomaseafoods)

This local staple has famously been serving the “freshest thing in town” for six decades. And it’s more than just a tagline — Everything on Point Loma’s menu is brought in just-caught from just outside their door. Once it is, the preparations are just as timeless as their traditions. From fresh oysters to lump crab cakes to sourdough-bread cod sandwiches served with hot fries and homemade tartar sauce, everything is a winner. So order up, take a seat on the deck overlooking the water, and enjoy the Pacific’s best.

2805 Emerson St, San Diego, CA 92106

Mitch’s Seafood (1.2 miles)

outdoor dining by a marina

(Photo: @mitchsseafood)

Established by a collective of three local families with a long history of fishing the coastal waters of the area, Mitch’s Seafood finds its foundation in tradition. Everything on the menu is famously sourced from local fishermen, so you know it’s as fresh as it gets. Additionally, the restaurant maintains a commitment to ensuring that everything they serve is sustainable and served responsibly. You’ll also find a deep selection of local craft brews at the full-service bar.

1403 Scott St, San Diego, CA 92106

La Barca (3.5 miles)

a table full of colorful cocktails and various seafood dishes

Although La Barca is one of the newer entries here, they’ve quickly distinguished themselves among locals as being a seafood spot to watch. Here, you’ll find fresh seafood served south-of-the-border style, using traditional and authentic Mexican recipes. That means hot and tasty fish tacos, grilled shrimp, and ceviche so fresh it almost bites back. Don’t miss sampling their deep craft cocktail menu when you go.

3048 Midway Dr, San Diego, CA 92110

Island Prime/C-Level (4 miles)

oysters on a table overlooking the water

(Photo: @islandprimeclevel)

Ask anyone in the city where they’d take a visitor they wanted to impress, and Island Prime (and its on-site C-Level Lounge) would typically top the list. This powerhouse pair takes oceanfront dining to an entirely new level. Set on piles directly over the water, this eatery lets you go beyond the beach, offering exceptional views of the water and downtown skyline. The menu also offers an elevated experience, specializing in steaks and — of course — seafood. Start with the splendid Kumiai oysters or crab cakes before diving into grilled swordfish, seared scallops, or shrimp and caviar angel hair pasta.

880 Harbor Island Dr, San Diego, CA 92101

Cannonball (6.3 miles)

(Photo: @cannonballsd)

Cannonball is a favorite spot among locals. Once you check it out, you won’t be surprised as to why that might be. Directly overlooking the Mission Beach Boardwalk, Cannonball can lay claim to having the largest beachfront rooftop in the city, with panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean. They also serve some of the city’s favorite seafood, with scrumptious sushi, peppered ahi tuna salad and the famous Wild Shrimp and Forbidden Rice all drawing raves. You’ll find a delightful drinks menu of beachy cocktails here, too.

3105 Ocean Front Walk, San Diego, CA 92109

The Fishery (8.5 miles)

a large plate of various fresh seafood

(Photo: @sdthefishery)

The Fishery is one of the most unique seafood stops in the city. In addition to the renowned open-kitchen restaurant, The Fishery also maintains a well-stocked seafood market right at the center of the action — so you can take home the same just-caught items you’ll find on the menu. And speaking of the menu, Chef Mike Reidy allows it to evolve with the seasons, ensuring that nothing you’ll order is ever out of its prime peak of flavor and freshness.

5040 Cass St, San Diego, CA 92109

Eddie V’s Prime Seafood (12.9 miles)

a seafood tower

(Photo: @eddievs_)

Eddie V’s has built an empire on taste, service, and elegant ambience. The La Jolla location is perched seaside on a sandstone cliff overlooking the Pacific, from which they source the bulk of their menu. We recommend starting with the Shellfish Tower, an appropriately named presentation of lobster, shrimp, crab, and oysters, before moving on to the sea bass, branzino, or halibut. After dinner, stick around for a cocktail and some live music in the adjacent lounge.

1270 Prospect St, La Jolla, CA 92037

Blue Wave Bar & Grill (just steps away!)

(Reel: @island_palms)

We’d be remiss if we didn’t put in a hearty recommendation for our very own Blue Wave Bar & Grill! It’s a great place to stop no matter what you’re craving, but seafood is definitely the star. Start with a bowl of our award-winning clam chowder or delectable coconut shrimp before digging into the guest-favorite Tiki salmon, lobster mac & cheese, or classic UK-style fish & chips. Island Palms guests are never far from savory seafood!

Plan Your Tasty Tour at Island Palms

Best Western Plus Island Palms is the ideal home base for striking out to sample the city’s most succulent seafood. Our competitive rates, fantastic waterfront location and guest-first amenities are a real catch. Best San Diego Brunch & Breakfast Spots

By Best Western Island Palms Hotel

Breakfast — it’s the most important meal of the day. There’s just no better way to get started on an exploration adventure than to fuel up with some fantastic food. And since “America’s Finest City” has such a world-class restaurant culture, you don’t have to settle for lackluster cuisine while you’re here. So if you’re on the hunt for the best San Diego breakfast and brunch spots, here are some of our favorites.

Bali Hai (0.5 miles away)

a dining table overlooking the water

(Photo: @balihairestaurant)

The stylish Polynesian flair and just-up-the-road location make Bali Hai an easy spot for us to recommend. Still, it’s their Sunday Brunch that makes Bali Hai a must-stop when visiting Shelter Island. Their buffet-style service of timeless breakfast favorites (with an island twist) includes classics like bacon, sausage and build-your-own omelets, plus delicious surprises like crab benedict, Korean short ribs, and bottomless Mimosas. If you’re feeling bold, sample one of their potent Mai Tais while you drink in the ocean view.

2230 Shelter Island Dr, San Diego, CA 92106

Humphreys SoCal Dining and Music

a large plate with eggs, toast, potatoes and bacon

The on-site eatery at our sister property Humphreys Half Moon Inn is a full-service eatery overlooking the serene Shelter Island Marina. They serve a full menu every day, but breakfast is particularly popular (thanks to signature dishes like the chorizo and egg chilaquiles, and SoCal breakfast burrito). Afterward, be sure to stop by Humphreys Backstage LIVE music lounge, which features a fantastic happy hour, incredible water views, views and live nightly entertainment by Southern California’s best musicians.

Breakfast Republic (2.9 miles away)

french toast topped with toasted marshmallows

(Photo: @breakfastrepublic)

Located inside nearby Liberty Station (which is a mandatory stop unto itself), Breakfast Republic offers decadently delicious twists on classic morning plates. So much so that they’ve won the Reader’s Choice award for “Best Breakfast” from San Diego Magazine. You’ll be hard-pressed to choose among tempting treats like shrimp and grits, S’Mores French toast, and breakfast bacon mac n’ cheese. You just can’t go wrong here.

2865 Sims Road, Ste 106, San Diego, CA 92106

Tom Ham’s Lighthouse (4.4 miles away)

a seafood buffet with crab legs and lobster tails

(Photo: @tomhamslighthouse)

Although largely known as one of the area’s most popular seafood restaurants, Tom Ham’s on Harbor Island also has a Sunday Brunch that’s not to be missed. Fresh fruit, gourmet pastries and buttermilk waffles are just the beginning. Moroccan fried chicken, seared yellowtail with rice and tri-tip roast are also ready and waiting. And of course, the raw bar (featuring Maine lobster, ceviche and fresh oysters) is a big draw, as well. If you can, get a table by the window — the skyline and water views are also delicious.

2150 Harbor Island Dr, San Diego, CA 92101

Hash House A Go Go (6.2 miles away)

Waffles and fried chicken

(Photo: @hashhouseagogo)

World-famous Hash House A Go Go has locations in five states. But the flagship (and frankly best) Hash House is the original, which has called San Diego home for more than two decades. A Midwest-inspired menu offers hearty favorites with a SoCal spin. Expect to find legendarily huge portions of goodies like oversized “Big Ol’ Pancakes,” loaded-up egg scrambles, and the signature towering sage-fried chicken and waffles.

3628 Fifth Ave, San Diego, CA 92103

Breakfast Company (6.4 miles away)

a table full of brunch dishes

(Photo: @breakfastcompanysd)

This scrumptious spot has quickly distinguished itself as a morning must-stop in San Diego’s trendy Gaslamp Quarter. The deep menu features traditional favorites with a twist, like shrimp enmoladas, chilaquiles suizos, chicken confit and grits, and even specialty options like a vegan Benedict and a seven-grain bowl. Of course, if you just want steak and eggs, french toast, or pancakes, you’ve also come to the right place.

551 J Street, San Diego, CA 92101

Café Madeleine (10 miles away)

Cafe Madeline exterior

(Photo: @cafemadeleine)

Keeping it simple is the order du jour at San Diego’s favorite Parisian-style spot. Art-nouveau decor offers the ambiance of a French brasserie, and the manifique menu only deepens the immersion. When you visit, be sure not to pass up the quiche lorraine, merguez baguette (with savory Moroccan lamb sausage) or the crêpes that made them a local favorite. Naturally, you’ll also find some of the best pastries in town here, from croissants to pain au chocolat.

2850 El Cajon Blvd, San Diego, CA 92104

Harry’s Coffee Shop (13.1 miles away)

pouring syrup onto blueberry pancakes

(Photo: @harryscoffeeshop)

As the awning out front proudly declares, Harry’s has been family-owned since 1960. One bite of their famous chicken fried steak and waffles, chocolate-chip pancakes, or eggs Benedict (with house-made hollandaise), and you’ll be able to taste the tradition. At Harry’s, the coffee is always hot and fresh, and the eggs crack as soon as dawn does. San Diego Magazine named Harry’s as San Diego’s Best Diner in 2018, so you know it’s great.

7545 Girard Ave, La Jolla, CA 92037

Blue Wave Bar & Grill (just steps away!)

a plate of food on a narrow table overlooking a marina

We’d be remiss if we didn’t put in a hearty recommendation for our own Blue Wave Bar & Grill! It’s a great place to stop at any time of day, but breakfast has always been a particular draw here. Order favorites like avocado toast or short rib and eggs from our full menu, or dig into a custom omelet, always made fresh from local ingredients. Then relax and sip a little orange juice while you drink in the morning sunshine!

Guide to San Diego’s Secret Bars

By Best Western Island Palms Hotel

Time-travel back to the days of Prohibition any time you enter one of San Diego’s secret bars. Speakeasies are popping up all over San Diego, and these eight will instantly immerse you in the debauchery of the Jazz Age — without even breaking the law. Sip sumptuous, old-school libations, take in the intimate ambiance, and admire some of the best and most unexpected design details in San Diego’s mixology scene.

Oculto 477

Oculto 477 is a respectful homage to mixologists of the past, including the pre-Prohibition and Prohibition eras, as well as the neighboring cemetery. A dress code and etiquette code are politely enforced (gentlemen, no baseball hats or flip-flops), and there’s a dedicated mezcal tasting room. The menu is arranged based on the style of cocktail, whether “sippers” or a punch bowl.

Secret Tip: The entrance is hidden in Tahona. We won’t tell you exactly where, of course — in this case, finding it is half the fun.

2414 San Diego Ave, San Diego, CA 92110 (4.8 miles from the hotel)

False Idol

False Idol is home to more than 200 varieties of rum — a nod to the immersive Tiki theme — as well as a flaming volcano that can “erupt” at any minute. (It can also be set off by anyone who orders the Alkala the Fierce cocktail.) A grotto, wood carvings, and a waterfall are just a few of the other creative and immersive details.

Secret Tip: Reach the venue via a walk-in refrigerator in the back of Little Italy’s Craft & Commerce restaurant.

675 W Beech St, San Diego, CA 92101 (5.2 miles from the hotel)

Room 56

Room 56 is the secret speakeasy at Moxy San Diego. It hides behind a bookcase, which you will access only after conferring with the resident “librarian” and receiving the highly guarded password. Among its inventive cocktails are the Martha Mary Mercy sour, with St. George All Purpose Vodka, vanilla orgeat, blackberry, and lemon, and the food menu’s six shared items rotate daily.

Secret Tip: Access the password on the rather mysteriously designed webpage. Text it to the number provided in order to ensure you’ll make it inside.

831 Sixth Ave, San Diego, CA 92101 (6.1 miles from the hotel)

Prohibition

Located in the Gaslamp neighborhood, Prohibition is styled as a vintage law office owned by a man by the name of Eddie O’Hare. Once inside, you’ll be immersed in a secret underground location, with an old-time ambiance and masterfully crafted cocktails.

Secret Tip: Find the door to Eddie O’Hare’s law office on Fifth Avenue to enter the speakeasy.

548 Fifth Avenue San Diego, CA 92101 (6.3 miles from the hotel)

Noble Experiment

Looking for an intimate and exclusive bar serving unique libations among a wall of skulls? Noble Experiment is waiting for you. A reservation is the only way to get a seat in the immaculately appointed space, located inside Neighborhood eatery, in East Village.

Secret Tip: The entrance of the speakeasy is through a wall of empty kegs, stacked along the wall near the restrooms.

777 G St, San Diego, CA 92101 (6.3 miles from the hotel)

Bar Three Piece

If you’re hanging out in North Park, dip into Seven Grand Whiskey Bar for a large selection of whiskey. Need more selection? Head to the back to find Bar Three Piece, a speakeasy nestled inside Seven Grand Whiskey Bar, home to over 250 patiently curated bottles of vintage iconic whiskey. In addition to whiskey, Nicaraguan cigars are available for purchase and paired with a drink of your choosing to be enjoyed on a private smoking patio.

Secret Tip: Find a bottle you love? Bar Three Piece offers a Private Bottle Locker Program, which allows you to purchase your own bottle of whiskey and have it held in a locker for your enjoyment upon each visit.

3054 University Ave, San Diego, CA 92104 (11.9 miles from the hotel)

Realm of the 52 Remedies

This 45-seat speakeasy is Kearny Mesa’s newest hotspot. Your journey starts in a white room decorated as a futuristic apothecary, inspired by an ancient manuscript of recipes and remedies stemming from ancient Chinese medicine. Continuing into the drinking den, guests are led down a portal to the past to find opulent seating, dramatic decorations and overhead sculptures to further enhance the spectacle created inside the Realm of 52 Remedies.

Secret Tip: The four-seat “Emperor’s Bar” inside the Realm of 52 Remedies offers exclusive access to a collection of premium spirits.

4805 Convoy Street, San Diego, CA 92111 (13.5 miles away)

Raised By Wolves

Recently named “Cocktail Bar of the Year” in Imbibe magazine, Raised by Wolves sits rather anachronistically in a mall, but is all nostalgia on the inside — think frescoes, polished cabinets, marble-tiled floors, and all-around dazzling design. It’s even got a rotating bar, where seasoned bartenders whip up cocktails like the Twilight Samurai (whisky, bitters, star anise, and pear eau-de-vie).

Secret Tip: This one is fittingly tucked into a liquor store, specifically, a revolving wall attached to a hidden fireplace.
