As the balmy days grow longer, spring takes a warmer turn around Memorial Day. The city plays host to a number of Memorial Day 2018 events, commemorations, and exhibits, so you’re sure to find something family-appropriate and thought-provoking wherever you visit.
The USS Midway Museum Legacy Week
Legacy Week at the USS Midway Museum, held May 26-28, honors American heroes with a series of activities designed for families. Ranging from a Wreath Memorial ceremony on the 26th, to interactive exhibits and a benefit concert, the schedule of events also includes a chance to meet aviators and learn about their experiences.
After you’ve had a chance to check out Legacy Week, you can stop by the iconic Unconditional Surrender Statue—also known as the “kissing” statue—located across from the USS Midway Museum at Tuna Harbor Park.
Swift Boats at War in Vietnam
Ongoing since February, the Maritime Museum of San Diego’s immersive exhibit explores the crafts used in the Vietnam War. Access to the exhibit is free with the price of admission.
Looking for more ways to remember? Head to Balboa Park to visit the Veterans Museum and Memorial Center, which occupies the former chapel of the Naval Hospital on Inspiration Point, or take a short drive north to Mt. Soledad National Veterans Memorial in La Jolla.

The House of Pacific Relations is hosting an Ethnic Food Fair in Balboa Park on Memorial Day, focusing on 34 different cuisines from around the world accompanied by live music.
