Raise Anchor For the Schooner Cup 2018
Scheduled for April 7, 2018, the Schooner Cup is one of the most popular ways to usher in spring in San Diego’s Shelter Island. Maritime enthusiasts have made this one of the best places to see the extraordinary craft of California’s tall ships. Featuring schooner races, trips aboard a replica galleon, and more, the Schooner Cup is a treat for anyone who loves the sea.
The Californian Vs. All Comers
No sailing experience required for this all-hands on deck event: The Maritime Museum of San Diego will sail California’s official tall ship Californian on San Diego Bay, and the public is invited to join the sail crew. Held Saturday, April 7 to support the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society (NMCRS), the Schooner Cup Charity Regatta sees the Californian racing against schooners of all sizes and types. Competing ships include a number of beautiful (and meticulously-preserved) historic crafts. To sail and compete in the race on Californian, tickets are $70 for adults and $48 for children. Boarding check-in ends at 9:45am for the Californian, so be sure to get there bright and early.
Step Aboard the San Salvador
Spanish galleons were once a common sight off the coast of San Diego. See the imposing presence of the ships sailed by Spanish explorers, and take a tour of a replica. The Maritime Museum of San Diego’s recreation of Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo’s galleon San Salvador will be boarding passengers for an afternoon of sailing; plus, if you’d rather watch the Californian race than take part, you can enjoy a great view of the schooners as they set off across San Diego Bay. Day sail tickets for the San Salvador are $99 for adults, $94 for seniors, military, and students 13-17 and $59 for children; tickets are limited.
